First test down

On Friday, I finished my testing with that five year old and I must admit it was very tricky. The problem I ran in to was he would say the letter on blurt out the answer before I could even explain to him what to do and how to do it. Is this going to hurt my scoring if he blurts out answers that are wrong and then once I explain to him what to do he says the answer? I figured we were supposed to be going off the first response so this is why I"m asking.

Thanks

Thanks for your help Amy. I am ready to continue with my son(:

WIAT Scoring-I have a headache

Ok so i have finished testing my son, all the raw scored have been recorded and all the standard scores have been recorded and all the necessary quartile scores have been recorded.

Now, I am terribly anxious to see where he falls on that large bell curve in the parent report, but I have no idea how to plot the scores. Appendix H talks about the score predictions. Are we supposed to use the WPPSI-R, the WISC-III, or the WAIS-III to plot the scores? Also are we doing a Full scale IQ (FSIQ) or a Verbal IQ (VIQ), or what?

My eyes have started to see double, I will take a break now ha ha.

WIAT-II question

Hello Mrs Anderson,

I am not sure if I am understanding scoring steps correctly. For example, in Numerical Operations it says if student responds correctly to three consecutive items, we award 1 point for each of the preceding, unadministered items. So does that mean we do not actually continue testing student for that particular sub-test? I tested my daughter all the way through until she missed three consecutive items.... Help Please!!

Question?

As some of you might know, I am currently 6 1/2 months along in my pregnancy and will probably not make it to the end of the school year which is when I am scheduled to have alot of ARD's for my students to determine their final placement for the upcoming school year. My question is since I will more than likely be on maturnity leave at this point, how is all the ARD paperwork and IEP's going to get done. I currently teach in a kinder collab with a regular ed teacher but I'm wondering am I still going to be expected to get the packets done before I leave or will someone else take care of the paperwork for me?

Questions

Hi Mrs. Anderson,

I started testing my daughter with the WIAT-II. I have a few questions.
When testing in Reading Comprehension, can a student go back to the
passage and look for the answer after the examiner has asked the question?

For a 9th grader in Reading Comprehension, we start in item 94 and stop at
item 127; however, somewhere in the middle between 7th and 8th grade
items, there is grades 13-16. I skipped items 108-112 but I am not sure
if that is the right procedure. If it is, how does it affect the total
raw score?

Do I include the lower grades max total raw scores with actual 9th grade
raw scores?

Thank you for your assistance!

Incentives

OK - I know we're not supposed to give incentives, but maybe we can make an exception for testing in this class! I think I've "used up" my 11 year old grandson! I mentioned the WIAT and wound up negotiating all afternoon! We finally agreed on a camping trip at Spring Break! I'm also out a weekend at the ranch with a sibling group of 4! I hope the rest of you have better luck than me getting test subjects!

Survived!

Well I survived the first weekend class. I was very nervous on Saturday but I was glad that Mrs. Anderson made it quite clear that I was a rookie in this field ahaha. If she didn't then I would have been just sitting there writing down stuff that I had no idea the meaning to. She also made it quite clear that no one should drop this class and I honestly was considering after the first class day. I think that with her help and the help of my classmates that I will be able to understand the art of being a diagnostician. At this point, reading specialist is my thing but I have already seen similarities between the two and that is what I need to focus on. Our first testing procedure seems to be a bit mind boggling but I know it serves great purpose and I need to make sure I do it correctly...and I don't want to fail the class either. :) Thank you Mrs. Anderson and the Alpine ladies for helping me out the first weekend and I guarantee this will not be the last you hear from me :-)

IEPs

This is only my second year to teach special education students. I have been to ARD meetings as a regular education teacher before, but of course was not required to complete the IEPs. I had never had to do IEPs and had never had training on how to do them until last year. The other resource teacher showed me one time how to do the IEPs on CLASS, the program we use, and then I was on my on. This year I have been to two workshops on how the state wants the NEW IEPs written. My school district is in Region 14, and from the information I have been told Region 14 schools are way behind on learning how to do the new IEPs. From what I understand all the other schools in Texas are already doing the new IEPs. Is everyone else doing the new IEPs and are you having a difficult time learning the correct way to do them? See you Saturday. Glenna

Blending Reading and Diagnosticians

Well here recently I have stumbled upon this diagnostician class and I have already learned so much in only a weeks time. I am pursuing to be a reading specialist however, I was told that by taking this class I will learn about how people think. Just with that description right there I was nervous but I am willing to try. My first question I would like to ask is, by our first class meeting, what should I expect about the art of a dianostician?
